So I decided to watch the first 5 Bond films. I'm Currently on GoldMember. But From Russia with Love was really good. It made me start to think that Nugget and me would make a good evil duo. But then I also realized, Bond just kills people, and bangs hot women. So I think I would prefer Bond, Nugget would still choose evil though. Drawn in Sketchbook. About 30-45 mins.

I enrolled in a Life Drawing Class on Saturdays from 1-4. It's 3 hrs. and It's all short poses, 1,2,3,5,10,15, and (1) 20 min. I didn't stay for the 20, even the 15 min poses seemed very long. I really enjoy the 2-10 min poses. So here are some of the better drawings. Hopefully I show vast improvement over the next 11 weeks.

So I wanted to send my Dad a thank you for helping me out with a credit card. I decided to draw him a card since I'm poor. I really enjoyed doing it. Simple ink wash, and India Ink line art. I plan on doing this more often, since I'm sure people will enjoy it a lot more than a crappy Hallmark card. The first image is the inside and the bottom image is the outside.

So I decided to redo the backgrounds for Seagulls, since they didn't seem like he was actually on a beach. It didn't have that 'beach feel'. I feel these new backgrounds have that feel much more, and I'm not redoing them again.

I decided to rework the backrounds I have already done for Seagulls, since they didn't really seem like they were capturing the beach atmosphere. Also, I changed the taco place to a taco cart. I think it fits better at the beach. Here's the first 3, I have the next 6 thumbnailed out and will work on those tomorrow. I like these much more since it actually seems like a beach to me. This is the last time I'm gonna rework them, I need to push through and finish this film.

I decided to draw hands today. These all only took about 10 mins. I'm not really a fan of guns but I liked how the hands looked so I decided to draw that one. I skipped the one with the hand holding a knife. I figured it would look like I was violent.

I found this pose incredibly hard. It was at a low angle and her head tilt made her face look strange since it was from the bottom. She was also wearing some weird frill, which I believe she is pulling, not quite sure. Her feet also werent' visible due to the lighting. Next time I'm gonna skip poses like this, since they won't help my portfolio.

So I've been working on this since last night. It's only 40fr, but I'm happy with how it's looking so far. Since I haven't posted lately I decided to toss this up. I'll continue to work on this over the weekend, so maybe by Monday, I can have the entire rough pass finished. I'm trying to make this very cartoony, and squash and stretchy. Enjoy!!

Since I haven't posted in a while, I did a couple of quick sketches to post. I've been working the last 3 weeks on the SB test again, and now that I'm finished it's time to work on 'Seagulls' again. I Want to finish this by the end of the year. I don't want to rush the animation, since I want it to be really well done. I'll post some Layouts when I get them finished. (And the first, is true. I was hit by a car recently, no terrible injuries but Ruby's dead. Ruby was my bike.)

This is a drawing I did for my girlfriend. I'm trying to paint more in PS. I need to beef up my portfolio. Some of the subtleties, are hard to see in the finished version. I think I should have had a higher contrast with the colors I used for the lights and darks. This was a good learning experience, and I will improve on the next bunch. Comments are welcome. I also haven't been posting much lately, but that will change. I'll have some character designs and Bg's from 'Seagulls' up soon. Be on the lookout!

Since I last posted. I did this drawing a while back, and just started playing around with it today. I'm gonna print it on sticker paper and put it on the front of my sketchbook. Not sure if I'm finished, but I like how it looks so far.

11 Second Club April competiton

Here's my entry for the 11 Second Club this month. I started very late on it. I finished it in a week and a half. I used a lot of holds, but tried to have some overlapping action to distract the viewer. I think it turned out really well. Enjoy!!

FG Art Show

Here's the painting at the different stages. Its acrylic on Canvas board, 9x12. It only took me about 4 hrs or so. It didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped, but I do have some more paintings planned so I can improve. The first is the rough drawing. I'll post another picture tomorrow with the frame.

Here's the link. I think it turned out pretty good. The first arm swing is very fast, but when I scanned and tested it at work, it wasn't as fast. Not sure what happened, I think it's a problem with Pencil Check, and Flipbook. But I switched it to 1's because on 2's it was way too slow. The lip sync turned out pretty well, not my best, but still good. Enjoy.

We started off with 5 min poses ( the bottom picture) and since there were not that many people we went onto 10 min poses. I wish we would do more 10 min poses, since mine turn out better with a little more time. Also, I need to find a way to quickly and easily sketch in a face that doesn't look creepy.

Focus on Hands

I'm continuing my focus on drawing hands. I like the closed hands, but the open ones on the tips of the fingers need a lot of work. They are coming out too rounded and blocky. I also think the thumbs on some of them turned out very well.

Some Designs for 'Seagulls'

Here's some roughs for the Seagull. I started with a circular head, but prefer the long oval instead. I like the body type but really need to work on the legs and tail. I want the bird to be a bit more cartoony looking, and that's why he has the combined eyes. I also, don't want the bird to seem smart, he is merely acting out of instinct that he wants food.

This is the main character. I like the body type the face is better and the trunks work well too. I'm going to make the glasses black and just have him emote with his eyebrows and mouth. I also included some hands since I really want to focus on making well defined hands. I want to draw hands like Milt Kahl, used to. That is going to be a major focus for this character.

So here's a picture of my self portrait in the Hanna-Barbara style. I did a run cylce (11 fr) in Flash. I built the model completely out of shapes. I think I'm gonna do another run cycle, but this time I'm only gonna use the brush to make the body parts. This short exercise has really helped me understand Flash, and by doing another by painting, it will only increase my understanding. I just need to paint the background and I can upload it tonight hopefully or early Wed. It took me about 4-5 hrs for the animation over the weekend.

Here are some designs I have been working on. I'm trying to draw in the UPA style, or early Hanna-Barbara. I want to do numerous shorts with the two characters, but with my self portrait I'm just gonna do a short 4-6 frame run cycle with a pan background. Hoping to finish that by Monday.

Why I love "A pup named Scooby Doo"

It's because of the crazy cartoony action that they used all the time on takes. The squash and stretch, and how the artists enlarged the head and hands. I love how the pushed the crazy takes. Not all the takes were extreme poses, some were holds with their heads popping open or something. It reminds me of the old cartoon shorts, mostly Tex Avery stuff. This is from Season 1. I'll be picking up Season's 2,3, and 4 next week. These poses are wonderful and very cartoony. I wish I saw more of this animation today. I know these type of cartoons (Animaniacs, Tiny Toons, A pup named Scooby Doo) were made very quickly and have many mistakes, but the crazy actions all of them used worked very well. A lot of the artists that worked on the first season of a pup named Scooby Doo went over to work on Tiny Toons. Another great show. Enjoy the screen grabs, and I'll post the clip at the end. I wanted to do a drawing that I could make into a sticker for the back of my sketchbook. I actually want to make a bunch of stickers and put them on. I just need to digitally ink and color the ones I currently have. Although, I will make some that have a really rough line, since I like how those look. Once I get some done, I'll take some pictures of my sketchbook and post them.

So, I've been really busy since last week and haven't had much time to draw. I can't go that long any more without drawing. It's a bad cycle: I don't draw, therefore my drawings don't come out well, then I don't want to draw. I need to stay focused. I started off the year good, and now I have to ramp up my drawing again. These are just some things I've worked on in the past couple of days. I start a couple of classes soon, so hopefully I'll have some work from there to show also.

That's My Pickle

So, I finished the entry I was working on for last November's 11 Sec. Club. It still has some small problems. The Major one being the framing. The original file (that crashed on me, so I had to build a new one) was a different resolution. The first was 4:3, the second 16:9. Therefore my camera moves are a little off, and by that I mean the second character's arms go off screen and he's very close to the edge. Also, I had to put a held cell of the sitting character's legs, which I hadn't planned on being in the shot before. So that looks a little weird. Oh, well, finishing this has helped me figure out many problems with the software I use, so they will get better from here on out.

Hopefully by the end of this month I'll have the two 11 sec club animations all done and will post them. I also plan on finishing the animatic of 'Seagulls' so I can start animating in Feb. I have plenty of New Year's drawing resolution's and I need a good start if I want to continue for 12 months. I guess I should try to expose the blog more too. I'll put that at the bottom of the list....

Once it gets closer to Christmas time, I always loved watching 'A Charlie Brown Christmas'. I really enjoyed all the peanuts films and thought Bill Melendez did a great job on them. I remember seeing a interview with Wes Anderson and he said one of his biggest influences was Bill Melendez. Go back and watch Wes' films, and you'll notice, more so in his older works. I also need to get 'A Christmas Story' and watch "How the Grinch stole Christmas". Since I don't get to have snow anymore, I at least can watch the films.

New Month, New 11 sec clip

Here's the start to this month's clip. At first I didn't like the dialogue, but I really like my idea, and think I can get some good acting out of it. Also, I like the character's I drew up. I haven't tried to animate a woman yet, since I can barely draw them. I really like the male character's look, with the fluffy hair and sideburns. These are still first drafts and I will refine them as I draw them more. The sticky notes on the bottom reflect my thought process. I threw out a couple of pages before these. These were just the ones I decided to use. Also, I will definitely get this one in, since I have the last week of the month off. NO EXCUSES, this time.

This is the ink version of the header I'm going to put up. I did the line art then scanned it in and I'm going to digitally ink and color it. Since I'm coloring it digitally I need to work on my black and white skills. As you can see I have much to improve on, but it turned out fairly well. The legs look very black, so I should have gone lighter. Below is the outline that I will digitally color.

Here's the video I did for the 11 sec. Club's November competition. I had numerous problems with exporting it and very little time. I did not make the deadline, but am glad I finished it. I'll add a walk cycle to the second character so he doesn't pop in and then I'm done with it and will toss part of it on my demo reel. At least now I know exactly what went wrong, and I can easily enter the december competition.

Jam Labels for a wedding gift

So, for a wedding gift for a friend I decided to give them some homemade jam. I then decided to make labels for each of the jars. These are what I came up with. I was kinda rushed working on them, so the drawings could have been a little better, but it was fun, and I now have 3 extra sheets of sticker paper to make more stickers. I inked and colored them in photoshop. Also, I'm pretty sure she doesn't check my blog, but in case she does: Surprise!!!!

A friend asked me to re-draw their logo. For the past 5 yrs they had been using a clip art picture from some program, that I forget. I did some designs that resembled the clip art and then created a couple new ones for them to decide which they wanted. Thankfully they chose one of the ones I created. I'm very happy with how it turned out. I drew a pencil sketch, then scanned it in and inked and colored it in photoshop.

On Lunch today I went to LACMA. I originally went to draw some classic European sculptures, but they moved them and there are no longer benches to sit on. So since I didn't feel like standing for 30 mins drawing those, I wandered around. The last stop I made was at the new Pan Pacific art section on the first floor. It's very small and most of the art is primitive tools, instruments and the like. I saw a very odd looking thing that was a skull rack. And all 3 of the skulls with it, had this very odd elongated nose with a hook on the end of it and eyes that popped out. I assume that this was attached so they could hang on the rack. On the other skulls it was protruding a bit more, but it was appealing to me, so I decided to do a 10-15 min sketch on one of the skulls. Very curious about this ritual.
